Biography of Lauv

Lauv is known primarily as a songwriter for other artists: for Charli XCX he wrote "Boys", and for Cheat Codes and Demi Lovato - "No Promises". In 2019, Lauv will present the long-awaited album "How I'm Feeling". He absorbs the most intimate thoughts of the singer.

Childhood and youth

Lauv's real name is Ari Staprance Leff, he was born on August 8, 1994, in San Francisco, California. He spent his early childhood in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, then his parents - American Jew Stuart Emiri Leff and Latvian Silya Inga - transported their son to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Ari was 6 years old when he first showed interest in music. The boy took piano and viola lessons, mastered the guitar at the age of 11, and composed his first song in high school at the age of 14.

During his high school years, Leff played in several bands and gravitated towards jazz. Over time, taste preferences have changed, and the young man was imbued with electronic music.

Leff graduated from Steinhardt School, a division of New York University, with a degree in Music Technology. At the same time, he decided to associate his biography with "behind the scenes" activities: working in a recording studio, composing lyrics for other performers, etc.

As a student, Lauv was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity, trained in Prague and at New York's Jungle City Studios, where Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, and Alisha Keys recorded.

Music

At university, Ari stopped composing songs for himself, focusing on outside artists. This was facilitated by an interview with Paul Simon, which the young man read in his 2nd year. The rock musician shared how he writes hits: he speaks only about himself and his feelings, even if he composes for someone else. Simon argued that it was easier to put your thoughts into the mouths of strangers than to speak from a pure heart.

The alias Lauv has several ties to Ari. According to the sign of the zodiac, he is Leo, which in translation into Latvian, his mother's native language, is lauva. Besides, the name Ari in Hebrew means "lion".

In 2014, after ending a painful love relationship, Lauv composed the track "The Other". Then the artist often gave songs to others, but he realized that "The Other" no one would sing as touchingly as he could. The song is a fusion of blues, indie pop, and jazz. Perhaps it was her unusual sound that captured the attention of the music aggregator Hype Machine and made it to the top 100 songs on Spotify.

After graduation, Lauv signed a contract with Prescription Songs. In 2015, the mini-collection "Lost in the Light" was released.

In May 2017, the single "I Like Me Better" premiered, reaching number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, and went platinum in 7 countries, including the United States. By the way, it was this country that became the venue for the debut tour of Lauv Late Nights, Deep Talks. In the same year, the artist toured Asia with Ed Sheeran.

In the first half of 2018, Lauv embarked on the I met you when I was 18 world tour for 4 months. The artist took everywhere a box with the inscription “My pipe dreams”, where fans could write whatever they wanted. The song "Superhero" is inspired by one of these notes.
